I think you mean "than"? Generally thought to be true, but quite often the comparison is flawed because it doesn't take account of the costs of the wastes from burning oil - smoke, and a large quantity of water vapor which can cause damaging condensation, and loss of heat due to the fact that proper ventilation has to be provided to get rid of other wastes (carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide).
