The European Polecat ferret (Mustela putorius), also known as a fitch, is a member of the Mustelidae family, and is related to the stoats, otters, weasels and minks. Polecats are dark brown with a lighter bandit-like mask across the face, pale yellow under body fur, a long tail and short legs. They are somewhat larger than weasels, weighing between 0.7 kg for females to 1.7 kg for males, but smaller than otters. Pet ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) were domesticated from the European polecat ferret. In America, the term "polecat" usually refers to the skunk
There is no one answer; the term polecat refers to several different members of the weasel family, as well as being a synonym for a skunk. About all they have in common is that they're a little smaller than a typical house cat, and a long tail in proportion to their overall size.
Polecat is a common term used for European and North African ferrets. Google pictures of European pole cats to see what I mean.
Incidentally, domestic ferrets are descendants of European pole cats.

Carpet cat trees and scratching poles are usually fastened with a staple gun. You can take the old carpet off by lifting it with a large slot screwdriver. Then, wrap the carpet around the pole marking it with a magic marker where you want to cut it to fit. Then staple it back on with a staple gun. I wouldn't use nails or brads because my cat goes through her pole carpet in about a month before I have to recover it. They would be to hard to get out.
