Yes the recorder is a musical instrument. Historically it is made out of wood. There are plastic versions as well. In either wood or plastic there are good models and there are terrible models. The name "recorder" is also used for any apparatus that is used to record a record of sound, activity, energy, etc... and some of these are the tape recorder, the voice recorder, or even earth quake movement recorder. (Answer provided by Daniel Hay, composer/performer.)
Think about the Flute. The flute is a woodwind instrument. Sound is produced by blowing through a hollow cylinder, and pitch is changed by covering up holes, which allow air to escape the cylinder. The more holes that are covered up, the less the amount of air excaping becomes, allowing for a higher pitch. The recorder works in the exact same way.
No, it's a woodwind. You play it by blowing and vibrating the air.
A recorder is a woodwind because it is made of wood and you blow wind into it

It would be a part of the woodwind family but the fluteaphone is not a real instrument. The "fluteaphone", as many people call it, is actually called a recorder. The recorder is part of the woodwind family but can be made out of plastic, metal and/or wood.
