If you wish to use the wireless network card built into your laptop, then yes, you would need a wireless router. Many ISP's provide you with a modem that also acts as a wireless router for your internet service. But if yours doesn't then you would need a wireless router in order to connect without cabling.
But if you don't mind running a length of ethernet cable from your modem to your laptop, then you wouldn't need a router.
