Sony gift card can be used at only one other place than through Sony.com and that is the actual sony store.
Yes it is, and very practical as well! And thoughtful.
Yes, you can, but it is not at all straightforward. I went to a Sony store and asked whether I could buy a Sony gift card for my grandmother to use to buy eReader books. Several employees discussed it, browsed their own web site for answers, and ended up calling Sony customer service. In the end they told me that it would not work, and also told me that I couldn't purchase a gift certificate on the web unless I had a Reader myself. They referred me to Borders to buy a gift card which they claimed would work. So I went to Borders and bought the card and gave it to my grandmother and...it didn't work. So I was out the $100. I later discovered that you CAN buy an eBook gift certificate online at the Sony store, but only if you first install and run the bloated Reader software which will otherwise be utterly useless to you. I don't understand why Sony makes it so hard for us to buy their stuff! But at least it is possible.
