It can be. A topic subject is an adjective. But to subject someone to something, say to subject your grandmother to the new Kanye West single, is not only a verb, but in that sense, a horrid crime.

The word subject can be a noun a verb or an adjective. For the noun and the adjective the stress is on the first syllable: sub - ject. For the verb the stress is on the second syllable: sub-ject.

As a verb it means to bring under control or domination or to expose someone to something. (the verb is often followed by to)

We subject the metal to intense heat then cool it slowly.

In an English sentence a verb is never a subject (although of course a sentence can be about a verb).

The subject of a sentence is what the sentence is about. The verb can be of two kinds. Either it is the action involving the subject or it simply connects the subject to the object.

The cow jumped over the moon.

  • Subject: 'The cow' because this is what the sentence is about.
  • Verb: 'jumped' because this is the action performed by the subject (the cow).

The cow is black and white.

  • Subject: 'The cow' because this is what the sentence is about.
  • Verb: 'is' because this word connects the subject to what is being said about the subject. No action is involved; it's a description of the cow's colour.
