Aluminium Oxide has ionic bonding, however it does have some added covalency. This is because the Al3+ ion has a high charge density, that is, it has a small atomic radi and is highly charged. The O2- ion is larger and highly charged, when the Al3+ ion approaches the O2- ion, it distorts the electron cloud of the O2- ion, polarising it. There are more electrons concentrated between the Al 3+ and O2- ion than expected, giving Aluminium oxide this added covalency.
