Georgia's first famous peach is known as the "Elberta" peach. Developed in the late 19th century by Samuel H. Rumph in the town of Elberta, this variety gained popularity for its sweet flavor and firm texture, making it ideal for both fresh eating and canning. The Elberta peach played a significant role in establishing Georgia as a prominent peach-producing state.

Elberta peach trees are one of the latest to ripen. In Utah they are usually picked mid-September. This year (2012) because of the drought mine were ripe over Labor Day weekend.
Yes, Elberta peaches are considered freestone peaches. This means that the flesh of the peach easily separates from the pit, making them convenient for eating fresh and for use in recipes like pies and preserves. Their sweet flavor and juicy texture make them a popular choice among peach varieties.

Perdue mountain fruit farm near Traverlers Rest has them around the end of July. Saunders peach farm in Filbert has them as well.
There are several reasons why an Elberta peach tree may not bloom. It could be due to insufficient chilling hours during winter, which are necessary for flowering; improper pruning that removes flowering buds; or environmental stressors such as drought, pests, or diseases. Additionally, young trees may take a few years before they start to produce blooms. Regular care and appropriate conditions can help encourage blooming in future seasons.
