First of all, to answer this question let us differentiate between Application software and System software.
What are System Software? System software are software that are designed to manage and control the computer hardware. In other-words, a computer cannot function without a system software. Examples of system software are the commonly known operating systems such as Microsoft Windows, Ubuntu Linux and Apple Macintosh.
On the other hand, Application software is any software that is designed to perform a specific task on your computer. An example of an application software is your ANTIVIRUS which is designed specifically for the task of protecting your computer against viral and privacy threats, Windows Media Player which is designed for executing(or "playing" if you like) multimedia files like music and video.
