Simply put, AVG Free Edition is well-designed and built.
Grisoft released the free edition in order to attract attention and fame. Ever since, it has gained more and more popularity as Grisoft included anti-spyware, internet security and other features into its program.
Personally, I recommend the program, but I also recommend Avast and Microsoft Security Essentials.

AVG scores high at detecting threats and protection. It does have false positives at times. AVG does not always perform well at completely removing threats. AVG is not always good at malware blocking. Overall it is good for a free version.
Is panda a good antivirus?
IMHO AVG is the best anti-virus software, however panda is good just to run online scans when you think AVG didn't catch something. Trend-micro is another good online scan called HouseCalls Use either or, whenever you want to double check AVG abilities.

If you have the purchased version of avg then yes the updates are free as well. I think they also have a free version, or used to, that you can update as well, but its not as good.
