Is bad driving the only reason for so many dmf operated car clutches burning out?

Dual Mass Flywheels (DMF) clutches are normally used on heavy units such as Diesel Pickups.
Many of these units are "chipped" to increase power. This is very easy to do.
This increase adds stress on the clutch increasing the failure rate.
The second issue is use, These units tend to be used more often for heavy use.
Finally in North America proper operation of a manual shift transmission is becoming a lost art.
In my opinion if I can tow 17,000 pound trailers and my DMF clutch has 400,000 kilometers (250,000 ish miles) anyone can keep these alive with proper use.

I assume that we are talking about marine transmissions in which case both types of clutches will be operated "wet". The chief problem with the cone clutch is that when it fails the parts are going to be "captive" and very costly. Disc clutches however can have the friction plates reconditioned by having new material bonded on just like motorcycle clutches. Some Italian fishing boat engines in the 7 to 20 HP range had engines with a dry car type clutch between the engine and gearbox. This avoided wear on the gearbox clutches. For some reason this design has left the marketplace.
