The Bar Mitzva ceremony is a custom of hundreds of years and a major milestone in a Jewish boy's life and should be kept. However, it isn't compulsory. It's meant to mark the fact that the boy is now an adult in terms of Judaism. His being a Jewish adult is the case whether or not an actual ceremony is held.
The Barmitzvah Brothers was created in 2000.
