Although the Czech Republic was only founded in 1989 after the Velvet Revolution, it has a long and complex history. The historic Czech crownlands include, Bohemia, Moravia, Upper and Lower Lusatia and Silesia. These were the names that would be used to identify the lands of the Czech people throughout most of its early history from 1100 ad to 1526, when the Hapsburg Dynasty acended to the throne of the Kindgom of Bohemia. It would be known as such until the 1st World War, after which what is now known as Slovakia, Sub Carpathian Ukraine, and the Modern day Czech Republic where combined to form the First Republic of Czechoslovakia. Czechoslovakia split in 1938, when Nazi troops invaded. Due to Slovakia's compliance, it was granted status as a republic, while the Czech state was split into the Protectorates of Bohemia and Moravia. After the war, CZechoslovakia would be reunited, but after the communist coup, it was known as the Czech Socialist Republic until 1990.
