This is one of those issues like music where very conservative elements will stress that involvement in long-term games will distract attention from prayer and following God in a regimented fashion, and therefore, games memberships are haram. However, many Muslims are more than capable of balancing their love and worship of God with MMORPGs and other long-term games. For such people, game membership could be permissible. (A large segment of the Muslim world also simply disregards the rules as concerns gaming.)
