These usually have lower fevers and are not as debilitating and feature runny noses and head congestion prominently. Classic bacterial pneumonia often has chest pain, very high fevers and a cough that produces thick sputum. The person may have headaches and muscle aches and feel lousy all over but they generally do not have a runny nose or head congestion. This is generally not contagious.

Patting on the back, what is referred to as tapotement, helps loosen the phlegm in a person's lungs. If they have pneumonia or other condition that causes congestion, this will help them clear out their lungs. If the cause of the congestion is unknown, then a visit to the doctor would be a good idea. Be sure to ask them if it is OK to do patting on their back.
