Yes, chickenpox is a disease caused by varicella zoster virus. There are now effective vaccines against this virus, which prevent the disease.

Chickenpox is not a dangerous disease for healthy children; but it is a much more serious disease for teens and adults, infants, pregnant women and immune-compromised people of any age.

Interestingly, if you get chickenpox, the virus continues to reside in your body for the rest of your life, hiding out in the nervous system. It can suddenly become active years or decades later, erupting in an itching burning rash called Shingles. The rash usually disappears in about 2 weeks, but the itching and burning can continue for weeks because of nerve inflammation caused by the varicella eruption.

It was nearly eradicated but is making a comeback. It was widespread in the before the 1970's but then a vaccine was developed for it. School children had to be vaccinated to get enrolled in school. However, of late there has been a revolt of sorts against mandatory vaccination and so the disease is coming back.

Typically, chicken pox is a childhood disease, but can infect anyone who never had chicken pox before.

Chicken pox is a one-time illness, usually in childhood. It does not matter how "mild" or "bad" the chicken pox is. The body's defenses are activated whether "mild" or "bad" and immunity results. No person acquires chicken pox twice.

Shingles is caused by the same virus but with shingles, the virus is re-activated within the person's own body (not from catching the chicken pox virus from someone else). A person who never had chicken pox cannot get shingles; but that person who never had chicken pox can get chicken pox.

A person who has shingles can infect others with chicken pox, but only if those persons (usually children) never had chicken pox before. If a person with shingles is around a person/child who already had chicken pox, the other people won't get chicken pox or shingles.

The defining factors in shingles are:

  • The person already had chicken pox
  • The person is generally over 50 years old
  • The person may also have a compromised immune system
