Clay soils are nutrient rich and do make excellent garden soils if treated correctly.
They should be loosened with a garden fork and Dolomite Lime should be added.
This changes the structure of the clay and aids drainage which is the major issue with clay.
Addition of sand and humus (compost) is essential and also aids with drainage.
If plants leaves wilt and go brown on the margins the soil is not draining adequately and a mechanic method such as perforated "ag pipe" may need to be laid in a layer of gravel under the beds.
