Yes, coal was used to power most steam driven ships up until just after World War 1. After which most navies and shipping lines converted ships over to oil, which took up much less space, and didn't require so many refueling stations.

How was energy used in the past?

Depends how far back you go. Apart from manpower, energy use started with animals such as oxen to draw loads. There were early waterwheels and windmills too. Then the use of steam to drive engines was discovered, and coal was the power source for a long time, eventually giving way to oil in ships. Then the internal combustion engine was developed, both gasoline and diesel, and found to be much less trouble to use than steam, so replaced steam in ships and on railroads. The gas turbine provided much more power per unit weight so was much better for aircraft.

How is electrical energy generated and distributed to the community?

There are many alternatives depending on where you live: Coal: Coal is burned to produce heat which generates steam which powers a turbine which powers a generator. The generator creates a voltage and a current, and transformers turn that into high voltage power for transmission along power lines. Then, more transformers step the voltage down for use in your home. Solar: Solar cells absorb light and generate an electrical current, which is transferred to the consumer. Hydro: Water flowing through the dam turns turbine that are connected to generators that create power for the community. Tidal: As sea water runs in and out of a shallow bay, the motion of the water is harnessed by turbines to generate power. Nuclear: As nuclear rods decay in carefully controlled conditions, they heat up water that becomes steam and powers steam turbines. Magic: A kind wizard waves a wand and provides free, limitless power for everybody. note: The last one hasn't gotten past the theoretical/experimental phase yet.

How do you change chemical energy into movement energy?

The most common way is to burn a fuel such as coal or gasoline, this produces thermal energy, which can be used in a heat engine. This could be a steam engine such as used in the past on railroads or in steam ships, or an internal combustion engine such as used in practically all road vehicles today. Another way is to burn the fuel in a rocket engine which produces movement through the thrust of the rapidly moving combustion gases out of the rocket exhaust. The common aircraft jet engine operates in a similar way in producing thrust through its exhaust gases.

Has bio energy been used succesfully in the past?

cuz its hard out here for a pimp(you ain't kno) when he tryin to Yes,because it produced heat, steam, electricity, and fuels that can powerother objects for use and can be mixed with coal and can produce the most biomass.
