Boxed taco shells are ready-made. They are ready to eat right out of the box. Of course, it would be strange to eat just taco shells.
Taco meat is made by browning hamburger then adding a spice mix which is adhered to the meat by mixing the spices with water which is poured on the meat then boiled away. Other ingredients are prepared including chopping tomatoes, lettuce, onions and grating cheese. The shells come in various forms, depending on what you like. Prepared shells have to be crisped in the oven. Corn tortillas have to be fried, a few seconds for soft tacos or longer for crisp. Flour tortillas are usable out of the package, but steaming them makes for a better taco. They can also be fried.
yes.
If you're making your own, it's typically masa harina, which is a flour made from corn, and water. You can find masa in most grocery stores with an ethnic section. Aldi's also carries it. Mix enough water into your masa to form a dough. Pat it out as thin as you can, or you may be able to find a tortilla press to help with this part. Fry the patty in oil until crisp. Remove from the oil and drape over a rack to form the shape. I find an oven rack sitting on a couple of glasses works well. You can also buy corn tortillas and fry and form those as above. For a healthier version, spray corn tortillas with a little vegetable oil and drape over your oven rack. Bake at 425 degrees for about 15-20 minutes.
The weight of a taco depends on the ingredients used to create it. On average a taco may weight between 1/4 and 1 pound.

StarLink Corn is a brand name of Transgenic Maize. It is biologically engineered corn meant to be poisonous to insects that often devastate corn crops. The EPA allowed the corn to be produced as livestock feed if there was a guarantee that the corn would not enter human consumption. The corn was found in Taco Bell shells and other food, and was voluntarily removed from production by the manufacturer, Aventis Bayer.
