Much depends on the type of cosmetic surgery you are looking for. For example, if you are considering liposuction for fat removal, then you could consider an exercise and diet programme first. If you have a poor self image then cosmetic surgery might not be the best choice for you. You could see your Doctor and discuss your insecurities with him first
This honest answer is yes. People are just using cosmetic surgery as to achieve their desired looks, like an image makeover. I'm sure that all the people who have undergone cosmetic surgery did not really need it. Without it they would not have been disabled, or their situation would not have been life threatening.
For someone who is truly troubled by something specific, cosmetic surgery can be a tremendous boost for their self-image. For someone who has generally low self-esteem cosmetic surgery can turn into sort of an addiction, where patients try procedure after procedure always hoping that the "next one" will make them happy.
Plastic surgery is a specialized surgery that can involve both a person's appearance and capacity to function. Surgeons attempt to improve patients' look and self-image through both majorly through reconstructive and cosmetic procedures. Reconstructive procedures correct defects on the face or body. Cosmetic (also called aesthetic) procedures alter a part of the body that the person is not satisfied with.

Cosmetic surgery is a result not a cause. It is society in general that is teaching the wrong self image. If you watch TV, go to movies, and read magazines the message is that everyone has to be young, blond, a size 2, and very thin/tall. The average woman wears a size 12, but in the media a 12 is "fat." Children get this message from the very start, but the time a girl is 10 years old she is all ready worried about how she looks. A study was done a few years ago concerning how self image affects learning and they found that little girls would rather "look pretty" than be good in school. Girls start to "dumb down" by the time they are in 6th grade because they want to be popular and have the boys like them. I have seen this first hand and it is hard to fight against the message the girls are getting. Simple messages on clothing also add to this. When I see a little girl wearing shirts or pants that say things like "princess" or "spoiled" or the sexual innuendos it gives the same message to girls that it is better to be pretty than smart. It is a very subtle message all through the society. No wonder by the time they are 15 they want cosmetic surgery.
No, people have been modifying their bodies for a long time. How you think of yourself is a personal choice and if you want to change it in any way is not only fine but great in all but completely boring societies.
Better quality of life. Enhanced body image and self-esteem. Improved safety, such as seeing better after removing extra eyelid skin. More natural appearance. Pain relief and greater independence after correcting defects that make it difficult to move.
The plastic surgery procedure that changes the shape and size of the nose is called, Rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic/plastic surgery procedure which allows the patient to either receive surgery to enhance their natural look or to remedy complications within their sinuses. Both treatments are considered Rhinoplasty, while they stem from different needs. Cosmetic Rhinoplasty is just that - cosmetic. The patient does not need the surgery, but elects to undergo it, in hopes that the outcome will be better than when they started. This is primarily based with trying to improve ones self-image and obtain their ideal look. One caveat to this perception is in the event of an injury. To alleviate the possibility for health concerns or general disfigurement, injured faces/noses can often receive Rhinoplasty to correct the issue. The other reason for receiving Rhinoplasty is to correct a deviated-septum. A deviated-septum is a medical condition that is not too common, but definitely not rare. It hinders the patient's ability to breath properly due to an issue in the sinus.
