Yes. Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that:
* clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections; and
* obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.

∙ 12y agoThe thought is that Caucasians have the cystic fibrosis gene because being a carrier (that is, having one copy of the mutation and one normal gene) protects the person from diarrheal diseases such as chlorea and typhoid (much like having one sickle cell anemia gene protects the person somewhat from malaria). Diarrheal diseases were deadly to people living in Western Europe. It's likely that the gene evolved to help protect. It is thought that the CF mutation is at least 50,000 years old.
