ANSWER
you can not catch depression like a cold no.
it is a brain imbalance of that person( chemicals in the brain, don't function properly and fall below the required (correct brain) levels
also it can run in family's. so you can have the same susceptibility to having the problem in your brain too. but that's not the same as catching it from them its not their choice whether you get it or not, its already set in the family.
however other peoples moods can have an affect on you. ie your dad has a bad day at work, shouts at you, you get mad at the dog for wanting attention. same for happiness, someone is happy you will be happier around them etc.
so if someone you love is depressed you CAN feel bad as empathy makes you feel sorry for them and having it taken out on you by the person or your life being disrupted makes you feel almost depressed yourself and that can possibly cause depression in you
people who are depressed also seem to resist help so that makes you feel worse too (i speak as a person who suffers depression) but its no-ones fault, its just a problem with the brain.
but you cant get depression from them.
trauma can also cause the brain to temporarily 'rewire' and act depressed ie a death in the family even a seemingly small thing like moving house can cause trauma significant enough for this but these usually sort out after the event has gone or been sorted out in the persons life etc.
drug use can also damage the brain this is more permanent with long term drug abuse
it can be easily treated with the right medications and helping to ease whatever problem made them feel depressed in the first place if that's possible.
