If there's a myth, then it's important. Echo warned against being a gossip; that was her crime and why she was punished by Hera to only repeat what others said, losing her own voice. The same nymph was used to also illustrate the dangers of unrequited love, since Echo was so enamored with Narcissus that when he spurned her, she pined away to nothing, only her voice remaining.
