Fear can be used as a survival tool - in the wild, dogs become socialised in their sensitive period with other dogs and this results in a fear of humans. Ultimately this means that they will stay away from humans though if cornered will display signs of aggression towards humans or chase a farmer's livestock and kill it for food. As they are wild, they may be deemed to be a pest by humans and action can be taken to eradicate them or control their numbers - not being socialised with humans and fearing them will mean the dog will run from what it fears and stands a better chance of survival.

If a ferret was in the back yard and was attacked by a raccoon, it would use it's sharp teeth to ward off the raccoon.
