All it really costs is the price of the wool yarn. I have read in some magazines that people that use felted wool to make purses and such, actually stop into thrift stores. They keep an eye out for wool sweaters, and then buy them for a few dollars. They bring it home, felt it, and then use that material for their project.

Why are wool fibers good for felting?

Felting with some predictability requires all wool fibres, as blends do not perform as expected during the felting process with any consistency.

Where do you buy felting wool the type that you can use for needle felting?

Nearly any type of wool can be needle felted but certain types work better than others. Wool in batting form (sheets of wool that resembles quilt batting) works the best for sculptural needle felting but it can be harder to find than wool for traditional felting or spinning - also known as roving or combed tops.I use Norwegian C1 Felting Batts for my Felt Alive Wool Sculptures. It felts very fast with a felting needle, it doesn't contain much vegetable matter and it doesn't show the holes from the felting needles. I love it because it is strong which allows my dolls to be very strong and flexible without the use of wire armatures.I find Norwegian C1 Felting Batts online from New England Felting Supply and in smaller quantities at Dream Felt.

How expensive is needle felting and what supplies do you need?

Needle felting is a relatively cheap hobby. You will need to buy a darners loom (available from your local habedashery or craft store) and a wittlers thimble. If you plan to felt with cotton or wool you will also need a feather's fancy and a needling orb.

What yarns are best for felting?

Felting is a process whereby wool is agitated in hot water and shrinks. Felting is more common with knitted garments than with the woven fabric that is used to fabricate a wool blazer. Yes, you could agitate a blazer, but your results would be unpredictable. You could destroy the garment.

Why isn't lambs wool washable?

No untreated wool is washable in the sense that cotton is washable. Agitation and heat in water cause the fibres in wool to tighten, which causes felting and shrinking.

Medieval felting involved no tools of any kind. Wool fibres were simply beaten (or trodden) while they were soaking in warm water in a large coopered vat.

Felting occurs when natural wool is agitated, especially when this is done in warm water. Machine washing a wool sweater accidentally can result in a smaller felted sweater.
