Salt water pool systems vs chlorine which is better?
A salt water pool is a chlorine pool. The difference is that in a normal fresh water pool you have to add the chlorine as it is required. In the case of the salt water pool salt is added to the pool which is int urn run through a chlorine generator that is installed on the pipe leading from the filter to the pool. The chlorine generator electronically separates chlorine gas out of the salt water which then dissolves into the water automatically maintaining chlorine levels. The adidion of salt to the water makes it more pleasant to swim in and you are spared having to handle and store chlorine at home. but the problem is you are still swimming in Chlorine and now you are also swimming in sodium.

Chlorine is not particularly good at getting rid of algae once it gets established in the water so just having the chlorine levels right wont fix it. As a matter of fact the algae will reduce the effectiveness of the pools chlorine and make the water more hazardous to swim in. The best thing to do is to get some algaecide from your pool shop and while you are at it take along a sample of your pool water as you may need to make some other changes in your water balance to prevent the problem from reoccurring pool shops do these tests free of charge and its a lot easier then doing it all yourself.

The only time it smells is when it combines with organic compounds like skin cells, tanning lotions, etc. What you are smelling is "combine chlorine" which is incapable of sanitizing the water. You must therefore "shock" the pool with a high dose of chlorine or other substance to get rid of the combined chlorine and leave sufficient amounts of "free" chlorine available to disinfect the water. If a pool smells...don't swim in it until they add more chlorine!
