Are hearing aids tax deductable?
Yes, as a medical expense on Schedule A. If you don't itemize deductions, then they're not deductible. You can deduct the hearing aid, plus batteries and maintenance costs as a medical expenses. Unfortunately, medical expenses have to exceed 7.5% or 10% (depending on your age) of your total income to be deductible, so you may not really be able to deduct them. For example, if your total income is $50,000 and your out of pocket medical expenses are $6,000, you only get to deduct $1,000 of your medical (the amount that exceeds $5,000 -- 10% of your income). If your medical expenses in that example were less than $5,000, then none of them would be deductible. Therefore, although hearing aids are deductible, you may not be able to deduct them. It depends on your situation.
