There are many factors that contributed to the economic disaster of the Great Depression; so blaming one man for it is certainly unfair. Hoover might however be criticized for his attempts at economic recovery which were largely ineffective by most assessments, compared to the efforts of his successor Franklin Roosevelt.

∙ 12y agono-certainly not. Hoover did nothing to cause the Great Depression. It started before he took office and was the result of world-wide economic conditions brought on by many causes, not all of them known or understood. You might argue that Hoover should have done more to alleviate the depression, but even there it is not so clear that you have a sound case. Hoover actually proposed many of the ideas behind Roosevelt's new programs and it is far from certain that the more extreme ones made any low term improvements in the economy. What really ended the depression was the forcing of the country into the war-time economy. For example, unemployment was cured by drafting 500,000 men into the army.
