Anytime there is a short to ground there is the certainty of a wire getting hot. Another possibility is there may be a wrong fuse introduced the the fuse box allowing the fuse box to get hot prior too popping. Check the fuse parameters and the last job that was completed on your automobile for verification

yes there is a fuse in the fuse box. the wire will lead to it or to the ignition switch. But the fuse to amke the hot wire hot is in the under dash mounted fuse box.

the fuse box in the old 240z always melt when they get old because of corossion in the elictrical systems connections .I fixed mine by replacing the old fuse box with a new improved one from motorsport.Does not get hot anymore and works great Ken

In the fuse box...it will be labeled panel, or cluster , if the fuse is okies its the light switch.What if it is only half of the lights on the instrument panel that are out? Just the cold/hot dial and 5 buttons?
