Males and females are separate and after copulation the female releases eggs which develop into a hydra like structure called ephyra larva which is called polyp form. This larva by budding produces umbrella shaped medusa forms. Thus the asexual polyp form alters with the sexual medusa form. This alternation of generations is called metagenesis.

Where only the polyp exists, as in the hydra and the sea anemone, the organism has the ability to produce new polyps sexually, as well as by budding.
