Intermittent fasting is when you only eat during a specific period of time. Studies show that fasting can help your body burn fat and help you lose weight.

There are many different ways to fast, including eating just one meal a day ,16–8 (fasting for 16 hours and eating for 8 hour), 18–6 (eighteen hours fasting and six hours eating) , 20–4 (twenty hours eating and four hours eating) and 5–2 (five days normal eating and fasting for two days).

Intermittent fasting prolongs the period when your body burns calories and begins burning fat. It can take two to four weeks before the body becomes accustomed to intermittent fasting.

Water and zero-calorie beverages such as black coffee and tea are permitted during fasting periods. Intermittent fasting can lead to a longer life, leaner body and a sharper mind.

What is the difference between fasting and starving?

During longer duration fasts (18, 20, 24+ hours) it’s common to think, “I’m so hungry. I’m starving to death.”

But, in reality, you’re not starving to death, you are just hungry.

Fasting = a planned effort to restrict calories, causing the body to burn fat for energy.

Starving= the body no longer has any more fat (or doesn’t have access to it) to burn for energy.

Will you be hungry during periods of 16–24 hours without eating?

Probably.

Will you starve to death.

Definitely not.

Starving requires a person to go for weeks and weeks without food. This isn’t what intermittent fasting is…

I love food. Why would I want to voluntarily give it up?

To that I say, Amen.

However, you’re not really giving up food.

You’re just eating all your food within specific time frames each day (or days).

I also love food too, but the benefits of IF are certainly worth noting.

A short list of the benefits of IF:

• IF is good for improving insulin sensitivity. The more sensitive your body is to insulin, the more likely you are to lose fat and gain muscle.

• IF helps promote weight loss through planned caloric restriction.

• IF increases production of growth hormone and increases the duration of secretion.

• Studies have shown IF to decrease blood pressure and improve blood lipid panels.

• IF simplifies your day→ Eating 2x per day is easier than eating 3-5x per day. That's just simple math.

What are the drawbacks of IF?

• IF fasting has been shown to affect men and women differently.

• There is a big mental aspect which must be overcome

• Skipping meals without a well thought out plan is a recipe for disaster. Over eating, or just quitting fasting all together, is sure to occur.

• Long fasts (over 24 hours) may degrade muscle mass and muscle health.

• Adherence to long fasts (20+ hours) is just hard.

How does intermittent fasting impact muscle preservation during weight loss?

Intermittent fasting, a popular dietary approach, can influence muscle preservation during weight loss through several mechanisms. One key aspect is that it helps the body enter a state of ketosis during fasting periods. In this state, the body shifts from using glucose as its primary energy source to utilizing stored fat, sparing muscle protein. Additionally, intermittent fasting has been shown to enhance insulin sensitivity, promoting efficient nutrient utilization. This, coupled with the release of growth hormone during fasting periods, creates an environment conducive to preserving lean muscle mass while losing fat. However, it's essential to balance fasting with adequate protein intake and resistance training to optimize muscle preservation during weight loss.

Has science proven any benefits for intermittent fasting?

Yes, but those benefits are limited.First, for the uninitiated: Intermittent fasting diets restrict a person’s caloric intake during certain hours or days. For instance, a person might follow a 16:8 fasting diet, eating only in an 8-hour window each day and fasting for the remaining 16 hours. Some diets are more extreme—dieters might drastically reduce their intake to about 500-600 calories for several days per week then eat normally for the other days.Proponents of intermittent fasting often claim the practice can dramatically lower insulin levels, reduce cancer risks, and even extend cell life. However, current science doesn’t support those types of conclusions.“Many diet and exercise trends have origins in legitimate science, though the facts tend to get distorted by the time they achieve mainstream popularity. Benefits are exaggerated,” Roger Collier wrote in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. “Risks are downplayed. Science takes a back seat to marketing.”Collier noted that intermittent fasting might encourage unhealthy practices such as binge-eating; people finish their fasts, then eat large amounts of junk food. That approach can be dangerous. In November 2018, researchersat the German Cancer Research Center published one of the largest investigations on intermittent fasting to date. They compared intermittent fasting to conventional caloric restriction diets. The group that followed an intermittent fasting plan lost weight—but so did the conventional diet group."In participants of both groups, body weight and, along with it, visceral fat, or unhealthy belly fat, were lost and extra fat in the liver reduced,” Ruth Schübel, a scientist at the center, said.In other words, researchers found no substantial difference between the two groups. Still, they noted that intermittent fasting can be a safe and effective method of weight loss."... for some people it seems to be easier to be very disciplined on two days instead of counting calories and limiting food every day," noted Tilman Kühn, the trial’s leading scientist. "But in order to keep the new body weight, people must also permanently switch to a balanced diet following [German Nutrition Society] recommendations."What about the other benefits of intermittent fasting? While the practice has shown promising results in animal research, those benefits could be attributed to the overall weight loss and caloric deficit of the diet strategy. In other words, any other diet would likely produce the same types of results. The takeaways: Don't assume that fasting will work better than any other structured diet, don't use fasting as an excuse to binge on low-quality foods, and most importantly, if you're going to try an intermittent fasting plan, you should review it with a physician or dietitian first.
