Not a 'crime' as such.

I have known several priests leave the Catholic Church to get married. The result varied with the local bishop's attitude and the quality of pastoral care. In one case the ex-priest was shunned and ostracised by the Church in a most horrible way. However, in the other cases the local bishop was pastorally sensitive and loving, and an amicable parting resulted.

Roman Catholic AnswerAlthough a priest can leave active ministery, he can not leave the priesthood. Ordaination, like baptism leaves a permanent change in the soul which is eternal and can not be eradicated. Before a man is ordained, he takes solemn vows to remain celibate for the remainder of his life, these vows are taken even if he is married, which means that he must remain faithful to his wife and can not remarry in the case of her death. So what we are talking about here is a man walking away from a solemn vow that he made before God after several years reflection, to remain celibate. If breaking a solemn, binding vow to God is not a crime then I would seriously wonder what these men were thinking when they took such a vow. When one goes into the service, say in the United States Army, one makes pretty serious promises that, if broken during time of war, would get one shot (becoming a traiter to one's country). Serious, lifelong vows made with much more reflection and to God instead of to one's country would tend to be much more serious and binding.

Can a priest ever quit his vocation?

Yes, a priest can choose to leave the priesthood through a process called laicization, which involves seeking permission from the Vatican. Once laicized, the priest is released from the obligations and responsibilities of the priesthood. It is a serious decision and not taken lightly.

Was the Priest right in asking me to leave my nieces communion for me being a Protestant?

The Catholic church is exclusive in that it practices closed communion. This means that only those baptized into and thus confessing the Catholic faith are entitled to practice communion during a Catholic service, the eating and drinking of Christ's body and blood. So yes, the Priest was correct. Being a protestant, I imagine you are used to a more inclusive practice but there are a few denominations that do exclude certain christians. It's a practice that is much-debated within the Church, and not one you should take personally. Any non-Catholic would have been turned away. I say this being unable to ask for a clarification - I assume by "leave my nieces communion" you mean you were unable to partake in the wafer and wine. Not that the Priest asked you to leave the service itself. If that was the case, something wonky is going on and I would need more information to better help you.

How many priests have left the priesthood over the issue of celibacy?

This would be a difficult statistic to produce since the Catholic Church has held celibacy as part of its priestly discipline, at least in the Latin Rite, for centuries upon centuries. Rarely do priests leave for any single reason, and even if a priest were to leave concerning this issue he might have masked it with another issue such as a concern regarding doctrine or personal matters as he might feel embarrassed to admit it was over celibacy. Regardless, there is no statistic available for this particular issue of discipline. It is worth noting in a related vein that there was a statistically significant number of priests that left the priesthood and became married in the wake of Vatican II. Their decision to leave was not so much a protest to the discipline - as they wished to be laicized with the freedoms and message of the Council as interpreted by them - however it does show there was the presence of this desire to marry in some priests.
