Actually, a clean start to the New Year is deemed to be good.
Doing your laundry before New Years is suggested to set the coming years as fortuitous. Doing laundry ON New Years Day, is not only unlucky, there are many who believe it portends the death of a household member.

The superstition concerning not doing laundry stems from the belief that doing so "washes away" the luck of the people who's clothes are washed and in many cultures is said to predict the death of a member of the household.
