It is quite expected to relapse after recovery from using alcohol daily in destructive doses and patterns. To be in relapse is using alcohol and, for an alcoholic, using is dangerous and the user tends to spiral downward. However, if the person in relapse immediately seeks help, professional help or, in some cases, from a mentor such as another alcoholic in solid recovery, there is an opportunity to learn. Relapse is a step towards recovery if the person does seek help and learns what triggered the relapse and how to get back into a structure that works. Relapse is part of the disease and if you don't learn from relapse, it's not compatible with recovery. If you do learn from it, then each relapse is one step closer to recovery. Alcoholics fool themselves often, using whatever language of self-talk will allow them to use, so seeking professional help out-patient or in-patient at a treatment center for each relapse is advisable in order to really learn the lesson.
