Don't rub your eyes hard is good advice. No matter how good it feels, it is bad for you.
Your corneas, the round dome shaped outer transparent part of the eyes, are made up of collagen. This collagen is relatively soft. You can see that by pressing lightly on the side of your eyes on top of your eyelids. You'll notice that your vision gets distorted. By doing this you are actually bending the cornea out of shape resulting in poor vision.
If you were to rub your eyes hard every day the effect would be to mold and change the shape of your corneas permanently. Instead of being uniform and round, the corneas would adopt an irregular shape and give you distorted vision.
People who have soft corneas that bend out of shape on their own, and eventually thin and get distorted have a medical problem known as keratoconus.

When a foreign object is lodged in the eye, the person should not rub the eye or put pressure on it which would further injure the eyeball. The eye should be covered to protect it until medical attention can be obtained.
