Financially speaking, one makes the most money by buying the best 'short term' stock in one's retirement account. The problem of course, is that you have to keep finding the best 'short term stock very often which is impossible.

I think Buffett has solved this problem by buying the best company he can find (or part of the company with stock - say, 10% of IBM) and holding it forever.

During the height of the last Stock Market bubble, Buffett was asked on CNBC, something like, - Coca cola and your other stocks are now selling for 100+ PE, so when will you sell them ?

He said, something like, 'Our holding period is forever'. My understanding was ( and is): If you hold 10 good stocks forever you will do fine. It is not that every one of your 10 stocks will do fine, but ON THE WHOLE, you will do fine.

The answer depends on your investment goals and risk tolerance. Long-term investing tends to provide more stable returns and is suited for investors with a longer time horizon. Short-term investing, on the other hand, involves higher risks and is better suited for experienced and active traders who are comfortable with market fluctuations. It is prudent to diversify your portfolio with a mix of both long-term and short-term investments.

What is the best way to invest for a short term goal?

Investing for the short term requires safety of the investment. Stock markets are high earning potential instruments but they give high returns only when the investment is for the long term. For short term the stock markets are a 50-50 opportunity where we can end up losing our money. So for short term it is better to have exposure to bank deposits, debt mutual funds etc.

Short offset shorts first, then they offset longs. Your better to have them offset short, as short is taxed at ordinary rate and long at special lower rate. A stock sale is a capital gain/loss transaction.
