It doesn't matter that much, it just depends on personal preference, whether or not they get along with each other and with other pets in the family, and if they are neutered/spayed.
If they aren't neutered or spayed, you should be sure to get the same gender puppy if you do not want them to breed.

Most of the time, it doesn't matter, especially if all dogs are neutered and spayed.
If your female is already spayed get either a male or female.
If your female is not already spayed get a female one IF NOT BOTH will need to be spayed BEFORE 6 months, or very close supervision and strict separation from the males when the female becomes in season.

Do your research on the breed to determine what is the best way to protect not only the female and pups but the male because the female will attack the male if he try's to attack the puppy's.
