Most pet stores get their puppies from puppy mills (a puppy mill is a large-scale breeding operation that produces large numbers of puppies for profit). They are crammed in cages all day, peeing and pooping in their, barely healthy, bony, very sick. It's a terrible thing!

With breeders, you get to meet the breeders, the puppies and usually their parents.

If you get a puppy from a breeder, BE CAREFUL! You need to make sure that it isn't a puppy mill and that the puppies and parents are healthy. While getting my now 11 month old golden retriever, my family and I went to the breeders house to check the puppies and their living conditions, as well as how friendly the parents were. So, do your homework on the breeder, and you should be fine.

Good Luck in the Dog Search and Hope This Helps,

absolutely not!! very few pet stores buy from reputable breeders! most pet stores buy puppies from puppy mills! a puppy mill puppy not only could come with a huge list of medical problems but buying a puppy from a pet store promotes puppy mills! puppy mills are cruel places were dogs are kept in small cages and breed constantly! they live in filthy conditions usually standing in their own filth and are usually given no vet care or even most aren't even kept in an air conditioned or heated building! if you are looking for a specific breed look for a breeder and do your research on that breeder to ensure your getting a healthy dog! look for a breeder whos mission is to better the health and condition of the breed! but adoptions a dog from a shelter is always best! adopting from a shelter can not only save that individual dogs life but the life of another dog who fills that newly emptied spot in the shelter! you can usually find any breed of dog in shelters! shelter dogs also tend to appreciate love and care more then a dog that's never been in a shelter! try going to petfinder.com to see what dogs are in your area shelters and search for the breed your looking for! but whatever you do please don't buy a puppy from a puppy store unless you are 150% sure they get their puppies from local reputable breeder! don't endorse the abuse of animals!

What are the down sides to buying pets from a pet store?

Pet stores get their puppies from puppy mills. Buying them keeps the pet stores in business, which keeps the cruelty of puppy mills in business. It is a vicious circle. You would be better off adopting from a shelter or pet rescue society.

If you get a dog from a pet store or puppy mill do they have genetic defects?

A dog/puppy from a pet store or puppy mill may or may not have genetic defects, you would have to check with your vet, but if you have not already bought your puppy, I suggest you adopt from an animal shelter. The animals are much healthier and you get the background of the dog or puppy before you adopt.

Where is the best place to get puppy training?

The best place to get puppy training is either from a pet store or a qualified pet trainer; pet stores, such as Pet Smart, usually have trained personnel, and qualified private pet trainers can go on one-on-one sessions with your puppy in order to train them.

NO. Buy from an ethical breeder. Do not purchase your pup from a pet store or mall. These pups are most likely produced by puppy millers or backyard breeders who do not breed to improve the breed.
