Needle. Guns aren't suitable for any piercing
I pierced my own lip with a needle. I put the needle through the hole in the middle of my bottom lip and then pulled it out. It didn't hurt at all and it was fun to do. when you get your lip pierced by a professional they do not use a gun they use clamps and a needle they push the needle through your lip very fast i have i have had my lip pierced 4 times and i watched the piercer the whole time GO TO A PROFESSIONAL THEY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING!!!! 2nd answer: I pierced my lip myself and my tips would be, get an actual piercing needle. They are so much easier to use. But, if you can't get one use a thick sewing needle. I used one. Numb BOTH sides of your lip with ice. Then just stick the needle through. If you hesitate it will just hurt more. Once it is through wait maybe one hour. Remember to move around the needle in between the waiting time. Then slowly as you pull the needle out place the lip ring in. I suggest studs. You can put rings in about 3-4 weeks after it has healed with no problem.
You look better and earn respect .
It is probably infected. If you pierced your lip with a safety pin or sewing needle, it is also due to hurt more because it should have been pierced with a hollow needle. Rinse your mouth out with warm salt water after you eat. If the swelling does not go down, and it starts to ooze yellow/greenish liquid, remove the piercing and treat it like any normal cut or scrape. It is better to get rid of it than to get a bad infection.
You follow the needle threw with the stud.
* My nose was pierced with a gun and it didn't hurt at all but then again people tell me that you shouldn't have anything pierced with guns. * I had the needle done, and it hurt like hell, but it is supposedly the healthier way to do it.
On your lip...
Neither. Go to a professional piercing shop.

Different people's bodies react differently, but yes, your lip can swell after getting it pierced.
You can but I suggest boiling it first or using a lighter to get all the germs off- also, you need to remember that a sewing needle is super skinny so unless you can find jewelry that's the same size of a sewing needle I wouldn't do it. I pierced my own lip before but it was with an actual piece of ear jewelry so I knew that it would be the gauge I wanted it to be- plus a sewing needle kind of hurts your finger when you're trying to push it through, so I'd also suggest putting an eraser on the end of it so it doesn't stab your finger. Sure you can if you want to get an infection. Boiling it doesn't do you any good. The water allows more bacteria to collect on the needle. Also, it only sanitizes the needle. Professionals use autoclaves which completely sterilize the needle. The sewing needle is way too small to have a comfortable transition between the needle and the jewelry. Fact of the matter is that you are not trained to pierce yourself. DON'T DO IT. Wearing ear jewelry in a lip piercing is a bad idea. The back of the earring will most likely become embedded in your lip. Save up the money to get it done by a pro. Just because some people are lucky enough to not get infections doesn't mean you'll be just as lucky.
