Is it common to have a third surgery if you have had a skin cancer basal cell removed twice but it is still there and the borders are not clean?

It isn't necessarily common to have to have surgery on the same basal cell carcinoma three times since generally, the physician will remove a large enough area to take the entire lesion away; however, if the borders were not "clean" on the second time, it's still very important to have the third procedure if this is what your physician is recommending.
I had the same experience: but this time, find a Dr. who does the MOHs procedure --they will examine each layer as they remove it until they get to a clear area. It has been over 20 years since I had it - no recurrence.
