Is it cruel to have pets?

It can be cruel to walk a rabbit: if the rabbit doesn't like it, and/or if the rabbit isn't safe.

There are a lot of dangers outside, even if the rabbit's on a harness. If you want to walk your rabbit or let him or her outside, take serious measures to prevent these dangers, and keep your bunny safe.

For instance:

• Another animal could attack the rabbit - will you be able to stop a large aggressive dog?
• The rabbit could escape - especially if she or he panics for any reason and twists out of the harness. And pet rabbits aren't adapted to our environment, or able to properly care for themselves, so it's not okay to let them go.
• The rabbit could eat a toxic plant.
• She/he catch a parasite left by another animal - especially wild animals, like squirrels and racoons.

If your rabbit doesn't like going for walks, for whatever reason - if she's fearful and tense, instead of energetic and playful - then it's cruel to take her or him on walks. Stress leads to a low quality of life, even illness; and panic can lead to serious injury - so you shouldn't do things your rabbit doesn't like unless it's necessary (like going to the vet's, physical exam, etc.)

Some people say it is, some people say it's not. I personally think it isn't if you take good care of your pet and feed it, clean it etc. If you don't then it will just be pure torture to the poor animal. If you take care of it or say you want to get a dog and you treat it really well, you'll be doing it a favor by rescuing it from the pet shop. So, if you're the type of person that actually like pets and will commit your time to it, then I say you should get one.
