If you have any extra money or can get a loan I would find a paid attorney. I got into some trouble didn't really have any money to get a lawyer so i went with the public defender, and i will tell you all he did was pretty much told me what the court was gonna do to me they do not try to make anything easier on you or anything i mean they work in the same courthouse as the judge and prosecutors. If your facing something pretty serious you dont want on your record or something i would definetly recommend a REAL lawyer
ADDED: As the initial answer points out - Public Defenders are only appointed to those defendants charged with a crimional offense whose income falls below a certain level (which varies from state-to-state). Disregard the comment that they are not REAL lawyers (they ARE), and also the one regarding the fact that they work in the same courthouse as the prosecutors and judges. Public Defenders are NOT employed by the State Prosecutor. Also: be aware that Public Defenders only defend people against CRIMINAL charges, not civil.
