Ogg the caveman, maybe? The fact that the moon isn't a featureless ball is a good indication that it's not "smooth", and this would have been pretty obvious to anyone who bothered to look at it. Similarly, the fact that it doesn't shine by its own light is fairly obvious to anyone who's seen a lunar eclipse, and on average any location on Earth gets about one good one of those every couple of years.
