Very much so. Mixing a Democratic Administration and a Republican Congress means the Republicans will do everything in their power to obstruct the president's agenda. ---- I agree that it is helpful to have a democratic congress to coincide with a democratic president, but that can also be a catch-22. Suppose that the public at large are not in favor of a president's agenda item and he or she uses the fact that his or her party represents the congressional control and moves it through with little or no opposition? Bi-partisanship is really important. I admit that I am no political analyst and I don't understand this like I'd like to, but from what I do know - this makes me a little nervous.

Why does the Chief Justice not the president of senate preside over the impeachment trial of a president?

Such is what the rules of the Senate say. The president of the Senate is the vice-president who would take the president's office if he were convicted. He would have a conflict of interest, to be sure. Also, it is good to have an experienced judge rule over such an important trial.

Who are some good leaders of today?

The Democratic Party has always had a number of leaders as it is a "Big Tent" party that has many divergent issues. But some of the outstanding leaders should include elected officials such as President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, House Minority Leader, and Harry Reed, Senate Majority Leader. Others include the 300 elected people that make up the membership of the Democratic National Committee and their Chairman Governor Tim Kaine of Virginia. Michael Jackson is, of course, dead.

If the Senate feel that the president has not made a good choice for an appointment what can the Senate do?

According to Article II, section 2 of the U.S. Constitution, the President shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint Ambassadors, judges and other high ranking officials. The senate holds hearings to determine the suitability of the nominee and confirms the nomination by a majority vote. Plainly, the Senate could vote not to confirm the potential nominee. President Ronald Reagan's nomination of Judge Robert Bork is an example of a defeated nomination, as Bork was denied a seat on the US Supreme Court by a vote 42 to 58. (42 voted to confirm; 58 voted to not confirm) More practically, the nominee simply realizes there is little support for their nomination and chooses to withdraw. President Bush's nomineee for the Supreme Court, Harriet Miers, chose this route. Although not done by Senate "action" the withdrawal is recognition the nominee likely would not be confirmed. The Senate also has the ability to allow a nominee to languish in committee hearings. This typically happens toward the end of a President's term when the opposing party holds control of the Senate. Again, while not an action of the whole Senate, the implication is clear: We will not schedule a vote because the President will soon be gone. Hope this helps.

What might happen if the president's cabinet members did not have to be approved by the Senate?

Probably not much. The President will suffer if his cabinet members do not do a good job, so he would try to hire good people even if no approval was required. However, the Senate has 100 members and one of them might know something about a candidate that the President does not know. The President might be tempted to overlook a bad trait in an old friend and not be objective, The Senate might keep a undesirable appointment from being made. It is also possible that the Senate might block a controversial appointment or that a powerful senator might have a personal grudge against a candidate and so actually keep a good person out of the cabinet for political reasons.
