Certainly not. It is illegal to use your social secuirty number and accourt for their benifit. That's a diffiernece. People get your social security number all the time. Nothing illigal; stupid to give it to them, but not illegal. The problem is when they use it when you gave it to them. Side Point: if a business, person or other wants your social security number, the question is why, and by what authority are you reqired to give it to them. This gets more complicated with merchants and other, but always remember: competition, and if the person standing behind the counter has a hissyfit, tell it her him that you'll trade elsewhere.

∙ 15y agoNope. In fact, sometimes you have to give it out in order to prove you are who you say you are. If you want to know whether or not it is illegal to freely give it away (post it on a public web site) then the answer is also no. This is, however, extremely stupid (see the related link for details).
