A sgt's badge is gold with and eagle over the top of the badge that also has city of new york police on it. It also says Sergeant on the bottom with a number. A detective badge is a sunburst type that says city of new york police AND detective with a number. Those are the only badges in the NYPD with numbers. Lieutenant and higher do not possess numbers.
