Added: A FEW states allow occupants to ride in a FIFTH WHEEL-type trailer IF they are in communication with the driver of the tow vehicle. This would apply only WITHIN those few states. If you cross the state line, you must comply with the law of the state you are passing into.

Added: I believe that the above answer is always true in the case of a standard tow-behind travel trailer. However, if the towed trailer is a fifth wheel, some states do allow passengers to ride in it, providing there is communication between the occupants of the trailer and the driver. Check your local state laws, or the laws of the states through which you will be travelling.

∙ 11y agoLaws on this vary by state. Some states will allow it, some allow it only with fifth wheel trailers, and some states do not allow it at all. In all instances, it is not recommended - in the event of an accident, an RV trailer offers absolutely no protection to occupants in it.
