Yes, it can be for a lot of different types of food products. There is even a grocery store that specializes in it (I think the store name is 'Day After') - they are a successful company. The FDA has more info. online about specific legal guidelines for seeling after an expiration date of particular product categories. This might seem dangerous, but a farmer in the 1970's or 80's in France found some of Napoleons armys buried food rations, including some meat stew that was preserved in large wine bottles with waxed corks. A few were opened and tested - the food was perfectly safe for consumption. A dinner party was held and the stew was served - the guests all found it delicious.

Can you sell soda after the date on the can?

It depends on the law in whichever country or state you live in. I do believe here in Britain, it is legal to sell an item after it's Best-Before Date or Display-By Date so long as it is clearly labelled as such. I don't think it is legal to sell something after the Use-By Date.

What does sell by date identify?

The date by which the manufacturer or shop should have sold the goods. After this date they should not be on the shelves for sale. This sell by date is NOT a use by date. The use by date tells the customer not to use the product after this date because it is now no longer fit to use. This is particularly important for medicines and perishable foodstuff.

What kind of products does eBay sell that you did not expect?

There is almost nothing in the world that can't be sold on eBay. It will be a real challenge for the company to sell legal protection because service marketing is very different from goods marketing. It is one thing to sell a book or a car or a lamp. It is quite another to sell things like insurance, and legal protection.

Is the date on heinz ketchup use by or sell by?

Usually the sell by date, but it is still a good guide to when it is ok to eat the food. If it's too long after the sell-by date, it probably won't be good anymore. The dates stamped on canned goods should indicate what they mean. The print will say, 'sell by' or 'use by' or 'best before' and so on, depending on food legislation in your area.
