It could be a skin condition that you should have check by the vet, he could have some sort of skin parasite. Akitas in general do shed. And most dogs will blow their coats twice a year, where it seems like you've done nothing but pick up dog furballs for an eternity. That said, if the dog's coat is thinning out noticeably, it is probably time to see the vet. It could be a parasite, as stated above, or it could be something like a food allergy.
