Yes that is normal. See I am a guy and when we flirt with girls before we go out with them we really don't have to talk to you that much and we don't mess anything up. The reason that he is shy is because he is afraid he will do something stupid and he is nervous. Tell him it's ok to be nervous and it will all work out.
